AIMS OF THE TRAINING

It is designed to improve the quality of the medical and/or court interpreters’ performance through the acquisition of specialized competences.

It seeks to meet the demand for highly qualified interpreters in the medical and legal fields.

CURRICULUM

The course covers Consecutive interpreting, particularly the specific note-taking technique of conference interpreters, from a C-or B language into the A-language, and from the A language into the B-language. The A-language is generally the interpreter’s native language. The B language is not the interpreter’s mother tongue but the interpreter is capable of using it actively. The C-language a passive foreign language.
⦁ Consecutive interpretation

Upon completion of the course, participants will have the ability to use the basic note-taking technique of conference interpreters. They will then be able to develop their own note-taking system adapted to their professional environment. This will allow them to provide a fluid rendition of the original message respectful of terminology and register.

COURSE CONTENT

Introduction to the note-taking technique for
Consecutive interpretation
Participants will be taught to actively resort to discourse analysis (framework, logical relations, chronology, and nonverbal information), symbols, abbreviations, and links, information distribution, and verticality, economy, clarity and accuracy.

INSTRUCTOR
The instructor will be a former T&I professor at a renowned European University who has also taught at the prestigious Central University of Venezuela and a T&I Certificate Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
She is also a voice coach at the European Commission and other European institutions. She works on spoken voice either with interpreters or with people who do public speaking.
Her fields of expertise are translation and interpretation, subtitling, voice coaching for interpreters, training of trainers, stress management.

PARTICIPANT’S PROFILE

In order to be eligible for admission to the program, participants must have:

⦁ excellent command of their mother tongue (A language) over a wide range of topics and registers;

⦁ have an in-depth knowledge of their working languages
(B and C);
⦁ be well-informed of the economic, social, medical, legal and cultural backgrounds of the countries in which their working languages are used.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a face-to-face training.
It will be given to a group of a maximum of 12 participants per session.

Participants will work individually or in groups of two or more.
As this is a practicum, emphasis will be given to individualized assessment and feedback during each exercise.
